Have you heard of the new craze, Pinterest? It is very addicting for those “pinning” craft ideas, home décor, planning weddings, and book marking places they would like to visit, and things they want to see. It is like scrapbooking, only virtual. So Visit Mesa thought that we would create our own Pinterest account and be part of the action. After all, a picture says a thousand words and we have plenty of them and plenty to say about Mesa! We want to help people decide where to visit, use our tourism bureau as a fun resource while planning their trip, and connect with us after they have left. We also want to create a relationship with the local residents and show them how to experience their own city. Since starting Pinterest, we have found many connections with companies far and wide that have Pinterest accounts. All these efforts to show off Mesa’s many charms are what helps spread the word about our city’s friendly character and uniqueness as a tourism destination. Lucky for us, we can now share these images of Mesa’s great places and spaces with our followers through yet another outlet!

So, take a look at our Pinterest page and you will find boards such as: Places To Stay, Things To Do, Weddings and Events, The Outdoors, Art, Dining, Shopping, and Sports. And let us know if there is a board we haven’t yet created but should! We are always adding more and more pins and boards every day (word of caution: pinning is addicting!).

Hi ya’ll! Terrie is my name and tourism is my game. As a transplant from Texas, I think of myself as a fairly good connoisseur of Mexican food. I have several Mesa restaurants that I think are some of the best Mexican food in Greater Phoenix-metro area. I had lunch at one of those last week called Mango’s Mexican Cafe located at 44 W. Main Street in downtown Mesa. mangosmexicancafe.com.

Mango’s Cafe is busy everyday at noon; unfortunately that is when my lunch hour begins. A couple of girls from the office and I went downtown to take a look at the sale going on at Domestic Bliss. After a little shopping, it was coffee and lunch time. Jessie volunteered to go to Inside the Bungalow to pick up the afternoon coffee and tea and I volunteered to go pick up our lunch. Being a Friday and knowing all the Mesa City offices were closed, I thought maybe I stood a chance to get in and out pretty quickly. I couldn’t have been more wrong. When I walked in the line was to the door. Knowing I was picking up the best street tacos in downtown Mesa I knew I had to stay. The line was moving pretty slowly it seemed there were several first-timers there looking over the menu. I could tell it was going to take awhile so I devised a plan. I pulled out my smart phone searched the number and called Mangos. Covering the mouthpiece trying to keep those around me from hearing what I was doing, I placed my order. I waited in line with everyone else and finally it was my turn. I gave my name and picked up my order and was back in the office with time to spare.

There aren’t many places that I would stand in line for lunch but Mango’s is definitely one of them. If you haven’t been to Mango’s Cafe it’s time you do. If you have, then it’s time to go again. Just don’t go at noon…………..

2nd Fridays in Mesa

Today is Friday the 13^th! It is also 2^nd Friday Night Out in Downtown Mesa. If you have not had an opportunity to come enjoy downtown Mesa and what it has to offer, tonight is the night! Known as the “Square Mile of Unique Style”, it is really becoming the place to be for shopping and dining. This is the perfect chance to do some local shopping and support the small businesses in your community. I have even taken a personal pledge to “Shop Local” and made this effort for one of my 2012 resolutions.

On the 2^nd Friday of every month Downtown Mesa’s Main Street’s sidewalks fill up with unique vendors and the store fronts stay open late. Every month there is a theme to the event, this month’s is “Film Fest”, and last month’s was “Art Attack”. If you come dressed as your favorite movie star you have a chance to win a prizes. They will also have movie trivia and they will be hosting a Short-Film Contest by local filmmakers.

Starting at 6pm, the art galleries are open to the public. You can grab a coffee at Lo-Fi and some food from a vendor or restaurant and enjoy the live entertainment. Or you can pop in all those cute boutiques you have driven by and never took the time to park the car and go inside.

Whether you want to participate in the theme for the month or just want to enjoy the evening, 2^nd Fridays in Downtown Mesa is a fun spot to check out great vendors and discover small businesses.

Get a taste of “the Keys”, in Mesa

Have you ever had one of those epiphanies where you say…”I forgot about that”??
Although I have these thoughts on a daily basis….being GoGo Ginger really keeps me on my toes…It happened recently when I attended a catered event at the Islamorada Fish Company (located inside of Bass Pro Shops).

“Where we are bringing the best possible seafood from “The Keys” to the deserts of Arizona”.

I have taken a few groups and out of town guests to Islamorada since it’s opening in June of 2007. But as I entered the restaurant for my networking event, I realized that I have overlooked this fantastic place to escape for a cocktail or happy hour in my own backyard.

When you walk in from either entrance (from the store or separate outdoor entrance) you eyes are immediately drawn to the 13,000 gallon salt water aquarium that separates the bar from the dinning room. I spent about 10 minutes just staring at the tropical fish…and they were probably staring back at me.

Then I proceeded to the main dining area where I tasted treats placed along the fifty-foot fireplace in the center of the room. (while it is not being used now, it does offer a cozy feeling during the winter months)

While I am mundane and always order the Mahi Mahi for dinner, I truly enjoyed the featured appetizer items last week: the Smoked Wahoo Dip (An Islamorada original recipe with smoked wahoo served with Club crackers) and the fried Alligator (hand-breaded tender American alligator served with our homemade gator sauce)

Their happy hour consists of a select list of fruity cocktails and appetizers at a reduced price.
