NATIONAL TRAVEL AND TOURISM WEEK – May 7-15

The Annual Salute to Travel and Tourism in America

The first full week of May is annually recognized as National Travel and Tourism Week, a tradition first celebrated in 1984.  Localized events are presented in cities, states and travel businesses nationwide to champion the power of travel. It was established as National
Tourism Week when the U.S. Congress passed a joint resolution in 1983 designating the week to be celebrated in May. In a White House ceremony, President Ronald Reagan signed a Presidential Proclamation urging citizens to observe the week with “the appropriate ceremonies and activities.”
Since its establishment, the U.S.travel community has collectively marked the event in a number of creative ways, from staging local rallies and conducting media outreach to securing proclamations and resolutions from local legislative bodies.

3rd Annual Falcon Field Open House celebrates 70th anniversary

Falcon Field Airport Open House

Falcon Field Airport Open House

The City of Mesa is hosting the 3rd Annual Falcon Field Open House on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Falcon Field Airport, 4636 East Fighter Aces Drive (located just north of McKellips Road between Greenfield Road and Higley Road).  The Open House will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and is open to the public.  Admission and parking are free.
This year’s Open House celebrates Falcon Field Airport’s 70th anniversary and continues its annual theme of “Runways, Roads and Rails” featuring a variety of transportation displays using Falcon Field Airport as the backdrop for the event.  The event will highlight the vital role of Falcon Field and the surrounding businesses to the community.
The Open House will feature static aircraft displays consisting of helicopters, vintage war birds, experimental aircraft and general aviation planes.  Boeing, MD Helicopters and the Mesa Police Department will have helicopters on display, along with the Mesa Fire Department’s airport fire truck.  The Commemorative Air Force will provide an exhibit to illustrate Falcon Field’s origin as a training base for British Royal Air Force (RAF) and U.S. Army Air Corps pilots during World War II.  Veterans who trained and instructed at Falcon Field during the war will be present to share their memories about the past.
A classic car show, military vehicle display, model railroads and a radio-control aircraft display will round out the multi-modal transportation exhibits.  There will also be cultural, community and local business displays to visit.
A special guest appearance by Freddy the Falcon will join the festivities along with food and nostalgic music.  Mayor Scott Smith and District 5 Councilwoman Dina Higgins will be on hand for a welcome ceremony at 11 a.m. near the fireplace of the original RAF cadets’ lounge.
For more information on this event, please visit the Falcon Field Web site at: www.mesaaz.gov/falcon_field/openhouse or call 480-644-2450.
